As I sat down with a dear friend recently, she shared some of her bountiful tomato harvest with me. We used that time to catch up, exchange stories, and enjoy the simple pleasure of fresh, healthy food. It reminded me so much of the spirit of Open Table MDI. Tuesday evening suppers have become a lot like this—moments of warmth and generosity, where we not only share a meal but also strengthen the bonds that knit our community together.
These meals are more than just food on a plate. They are an opportunity to reach out, connect, and remind one another that we belong to something greater. Each week, approximately 350 people are welcomed to our tables and fed with delicious, wholesome meals that are prepared with care. Thanks to our partnership with Island Connections, we are also able to extend that warmth beyond our doors, delivering meals across Mount Desert Island to neighbors who may not be able to join us in person.
We all know that food and connection are essential to our well-being—physically, emotionally, and socially. They are critical support, especially for those facing the harsh realities of hunger and isolation. That’s why the work we do at Open Table MDI is so important. It’s not just about feeding people; it’s about fostering community, offering dignity, and creating a space where everyone feels seen and valued.
But we can’t do it alone. Just like my friend who shared her tomatoes, we rely on the generosity of people like you. Your support—whether it’s in the form of a donation, volunteering, or simply sharing our mission—makes all the difference. It helps us continue to offer these meals, week after week, even as the need grows and our costs rise.
Your gift isn’t just a donation. It’s a lifeline for someone who may be struggling to make ends meet. It’s a moment of connection for someone who feels alone. It’s a step toward disrupting the cycle of poverty and hunger in our community. With your help, we can continue to be a beacon of hope—a place where food and fellowship go hand in hand, lifting spirits and nourishing lives.
We are deeply grateful to the donors who make these meals possible. Like the gardener with a surplus of tomatoes, your contribution provides sustenance for those in need. And, like the act of sharing a meal, it builds something far more profound than just a full stomach. It creates a stronger, more resilient community where no one is left behind.
Thank you for being part of this incredible journey with us. Together, we are not just feeding people, we’re cultivating hope, kindness, and connection.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Puranjot Kaur
