Since our doors first opened in 2018, Open Table MDI has been more than a place to share a meal—it’s been a place to share life. Around our tables, neighbors have met for the first time, stories have been exchanged across generations, and a true sense of community has taken root. Our mission has always been simple yet profound: to inspire strong, loving, and inclusive communities by bringing people together over food.
In close to eight years, we’ve served over 135,000 nourishing meals—both at our communal dinners and through home deliveries across Mount Desert Island. Each week, about 350 people find warmth, sustenance, and connection through Open Table MDI. Whether it’s a bright summer evening or a long winter night, we are here to remind our neighbors that they are seen, valued, and never alone.
As food insecurity continues to rise in our region, this work matters more than ever. And now, Open Table MDI itself is in a season of change. Our beloved founder and head chef, Mahandeva, is stepping back from his role due to health reasons. We are deeply grateful for the heart, flavor, and community he has poured into this work—and we are committed to carrying that spirit forward into a new chapter.
With your help, we plan to reopen our doors in January 2026. This next phase will build on the foundation Mahandeva helped create while reimagining how Open Table MDI can best serve our island community in the years ahead.
There’s already beautiful momentum: a generous donor has stepped forward to fund an entire year of our new chef’s salary. But to reopen and sustain our programs, we must still meet our core operating expenses—everything from ingredients and kitchen supplies to rent, utilities, and delivery costs.
That’s where you come in.
Your gift today will help us bring Open Table MDI back to life—so that once again, our neighbors can gather, share stories, and find belonging around a shared meal. Together, we can ensure that no one on this island eats alone.
Will you make a donation today to help us reopen Open Table MDI in 2026?
